Making of the Yamasa Raggio

Yamasa Raggio real

A real life Yamasa Raggio.

The 2006 Project Mu Yamasa Raggio is presumably the high performance version of the Raggio. Not much is known about this car since there are not many sources to explain it, but the only reason it's better than the original one is - it's a real-life car, with a Honda NSX being its template. It is an unlockable Special Machine that appears in Ridge Racer 2 (PSP). It reappears in Pachislot Ridge Racer as one of the two main machines for the entire game.

Description[]

It is a red Soldat Raggio surrounded by advertisements. Its number is 27 and its trademark logo, also that of the pachislot company Yamasa, seems to be a mermaid swimming.

This car was the one and only Ridge Racer machine that was made into real life. This designer car was shown in the 2006 Tokyo Auto Salon, made by Project Mu with the permission of Namco. It was powered with the original NSX 3.2-litre V6 with DIC-R fuel injectors, with many extras like an ARC intercooler and an ORC clutch, commissioned by Yamasa, a Pachislot maker company. It was drivable and performed better than the original NSX.

The donor car might presumably be based on a late-90s first-generation Honda NSX (at least from 1997, as the 3.2-litre V6 had been introduced by then), as it featured pop-up headlights; the facelifted model featured fixed headlights later on.

In Ridge Racer 2 (PSP)[]

It is classified as Special 2. In the Deus Tour of Ridge Racer 2 (PSP), the player will have to race against four special machines, these are the Age Crinale Kid, Age Angelus Kid, Namco Pac-Man, and Yamasa Raggio.

To unlock this car, complete the "Red Comet" tour consisting of two rounds at the EX Revolution Road.

In-game, the car can reach a normal top speed of 390km/h (242mph) and is renowned for its unbelievable acceleration and grippy handling (almost Standard-like, compared to the original car, which was a Dynamic-type car), not to mention its strong nitrous boost.

Trivia[]

  • If the Nissan R390 GT1 from a special demo edition of Rage Racer is included, then this is the second real-life car featured in the series.
  • Yamasa Raggio's challenge name, Red Comet, appears to be a tribute to Mobile Suit Gundam's infamous villain Char Aznable, which shares the same nickname, and (in)famous for piloting a customized red mobile suit that is "three times faster than a normal unit".
  • In contrast to its donor car, which was a 1990's Japanese specification Honda NSX, the car's body shape is actually wider and much longer than the original.
    • As a result, it is a right-hand drive model unlike the car it was based on.
  • It is referred to as Yamasa Raggio instead of Soldat Yamasa Raggio despite it being manufactured by Soldat. Also, in contrast to this car in-game as being a product of a part-French, part-Italian manufacturer, in reality, it was actually a Japanese-built car. The unlock cutscene, however, shows it being unloaded from a Soldat-sponsored fighter jet.
  • It is the only machine in Ridge Racer (PSP) 2 that cannot have its color changed under normal circumstances. It only remains in the signature red livery, which is the same as the real car.
  • The car's appearance in-game is very far off from the actual car, as it is a copy-paste of the existing Raggio in the game, but with the livery from the actual car applied (some sponsors were actually changed or removed completely due to licensing issues as the actual car uses real-world sponsor decals). The actual car seems to be wider and boxier in shape. Also, the in-game car uses the original Soldat Raggio's rims, while the actual car instead uses RAYS Volk GT-C rims instead.
  • The actual Yamasa Raggio's whereabouts, or even its fate, to this day, currently remain unknown.
  • The only known specification of the Yamasa Raggio is that it produces roughly 276 horsepower, but could possibly be more given the upgrades. Other such technical specifications are extremely hard to find over the internet, or are not disclosed at all.
  • There are rare pictures of the actual car with a Japanese number plate, which implies that it is a street-legal creation and can be driven on public roads.
